Reviews for Kyung Hwa Shon at London Art Fair

Art Attack / India Irving:
ArtAttack Interviews Korean artist, Kyung Hwa Shon
"After being drawn in by her work at the London Art Fair back in January, ArtAttack had the chance to speak with Korean artist, Kyung Hwa Shon, about her work, inspirations and advice for young artists just starting out."

Art Report / Sarah Barlondo:
The Faces of Art Projects At London Art Fair 2016

"Kyung Hwa Shon, winner of the prestigious SOLO Award, and WW Contemporary Art Gallery ran the show. The artist is presenting two of her new works: The City of Fragments and The Trace of Stillman.  Shon’s work is more than just visual. Her psychological and meticulous exploration of the relationship between the city and the imagination confronts the evolution of a character in a novel, Paul Auster’s “City of Glass.” Brilliant in every way, the Korean artist was a Starr Scholar at the Royal Academy of Arts in London and currently studying for a PhD in Painting at the Royal College of Art. “I left this [blank] space [in The City of Fragment] so the viewers could imagine and write their own story with my work, like a reader would do in a novel with the characters,” Shon said. Until 2015, the SOLO Award had only been open to British artists—Shon, although Korean, qualified being a UK-based artist. Now, starting in 2016, the SOLO Award is calling all international artists working in any medium and offering a £2000 and a solo exhibition."

Reviews for Amba Sayal-Bennett at London Art Fair

Cajsa Carlson on Cool Hunting: "One of our favorites this year was Amba Sayal-Bennett, whose graphic, geometric illustrations and "three-dimensional" drawings have already received a fair share of buzz—she was this year’s winner of the SOLO Award, and has works in the Saatchi Gallery and the Ashmolean Museum."  http://www.coolhunting.com/culture/interview-amba-sayalbennett
P C Robinson on Artlyst: "WW Gallery showed an installation by Amba Sayal-Bennett, which created a Neo-Constructivist drawing/sculpture from an overhead projector and various found objects."

Loredana Pazzini-Paracciani on Artling:
"Another engaging work, in the Art Projects section, was Maugham by Amba Sayal-Bennett presented by WW Contemporary Art. Magnified structural drawings were projected on the gallery wall invading the space with light and geometry. Upon closer inspection, however, one would realize that these overwhelming architectural forms were actually made of several sketches all produced in a very small scale. The artist in her practice departs from familiar elements of everyday life and manipulates them to be reused as ‘words’ in her own visual lexicon."

Reviews for North South Divine, WW Gallery and Platform A, April-June 2013

Extract from a review by
Paul Hobson for the Contemporary Art Society (Hobson's Choice, 12 April 2013):
"The exhibition addresses questions around civic language and art’s place alongside it, and the distinction between public and private space.  Many of the works find common ground through the use of a modernist language that aims to investigate, critique and uncover. While also held together by shared processes and materials, the artists respond to their common art historical reference point individually, some with subversive wit, others through their use and juxtaposition of materials. This makes for an interesting dialogue between unity and simplicity on the one hand, and a more interrogative, questioning discourse on the other. Don’t miss this exhibition!"

Reviews for Art Star Superstore at London Art Fair 2011

Latest Art Newsletter From Artlyst.com: The London Art Fair in Islington was in top form this year, with a good selection of emerging galleries and Artists in 'Art Projects'. The section featured 30 international solo and group exhibitions. My personal favourite was WW Gallery's 'Supermarket Sweep' an installation of a superstore for Contemporary Art.

Curated Mag: Running this week, London Art Fair 2011 features some 120 galleries and is now in its 23rd year.Vernissage visited and had this to say, “Yes, Frieze is not the only art fair in London (but the coolest – whether this is a compliment or not, I’m not sure). London Art Fair is different – very different. It’s the first time that VernissageTV visited the fair, and apart from some impressions of the fair, we spoke with the directors of three galleries. Niklas von Bartha (Partner, von Bartha Contemporary) is presenting the work of Mike Meiré, Will Lunn (Co-Director, Sumarria Lunn) has several installations by Littlewhitehad at the fair, and Debra Wilson (Co-Director, WW Gallery) talks about WW Gallery’s Art Star Superstore at London Art Fair.”

Amelia's Magazine: The fair had plenty of playful exhibitions too, including Sadie Hennessy’s ‘Gary Glitter Glam Rock’ candy at Wilson Williams Gallery’s Art Star Superstore. Yours for £3, but as my friend said, with Glitter’s history I’m not sure I could put that in my mouth.

Spoonfed: Another gallery exploring the economy is WW Gallery, whose Art Star Superstore features artworks in plastic bags and hanging up on rails like something in a high-street retail outlet. It's a cool idea but actually makes viewing (and therefore buying) the works kind of annoying – it both highlights and hinders the commercial nature of the fair, you might say.

Art Daily: Among other works, WW Gallery (London) presents a range of art “products” in a stand modeled on a superstore aisle complete with a checkout and roving promotions girl.

Reviews for Phil Illingworth 'Frightening Albert' April-May 2012

Hobson's Choice
Friday 11th May 2012

'Event of the week',
Art Licks, April 9th

‘Illingworth has taken a spanking new space and pathological terror and turned them into something witty, engaging and colourful, making this an auspicious start for WW Gallery mark two.’
Kate Weir, Spoonfed

‘The two-room, L-shaped gallery, resplendent in its whiteness, could
indeed be mistaken for a lab, and it would be no great leap to imagine
oneself shut in there alone, left to play with the objects on display,
perhaps subject to video observation from afar, as part of some social
experiment.
’
Anna McNay, roves and roams

‘The process led to the realisation of what I see as a personal lexicon of materials, raw ideas, and visual syntax. I gave myself 'permission' to use this vocabulary to express other concepts, and from that point on I knew that my practice had expanded enormously.’
Phil Illingworth on Jotta 'In Conversation: WW Gallery and Phil Illingworth'

"‘Frightening Albert' seems to embody, aesthetically and conceptually, what WW is all about.” In an attempt to pin-down this affinity, Williams and Wilson describe the show as “both bold and subtle, audacious without being pretentious, subversive and witty, visually and viscerally engaging, and above all superbly crafted.”
